Case report: SARS-CoV-2 in placenta after miscarriage

A research letter in the Journal of the American Medical Association details the case of a 28-year-old pregnant woman at 19 weeks' gestation who had a nasopharyngeal swab that was positive for SARS-CoV-2, as well as multiple symptoms including diarrhea, dry cough, myalgia and fever. After 10 hours of labor, the patient delivered a stillborn infant, with swabs from fetal blood, meconium, mouth and axillae testing negative for both bacterial infection and SARS-CoV-2, while swabs and biopsies from close to the umbilical cord and peripheral margin of the placenta were negative for bacterial infection but positive for SARS-CoV-2.
