New study compares outcomes of infants pre and post initiation of a feeding protocol providing an exclusive human milk–based diet (HUM)., entitled “Beyond Necrotizing Enterocolitis Prevention: Improving Outcomes with an Exclusive Human Milk–Based Diet.”
This is a multicenter retrospective study that included 1,587 infants with a birth weight <1,250g and compared those who received bovine-based diet to those who received an exclusive human milk diet (HUM). The results include:
- HUM group had significantly lower incidence of NEC and mortality
- HUM group also had a reduction in late-onset sepsis, PDA, BPD, ROP and decrease in number of ventilator day
