Study supports universal newborn screenings for CMV infection

A study presented at IDWeek 2019 suggested universal screening of newborns for congenital cytomegalovirus may be the best way to determine if the infection is the cause of sensorineural hearing loss. Researcher Alexandra Medoro of Nationwide Children's Hospital-The Ohio State University said the hospital's NICU has started testing all infants for CMV on admission and has seen benefits from knowing whether the infection was congenital or acquired.
